EVAN SAT BEHIND THE desk, cursing a blue streak in his head. It was her first day at home all alone without him. What if a bear came out of the woods and attacked Leta when he wasnât home to defend his lovely wife? He imagined a gang of rowdy bikers coming through town on their way to the lake for some rest and relaxation and spotting his sexy better half. He had a vision of her trying to fight them off as the big one in the front threw her over his shoulder and tossed a big meaty thigh over the leg of his hog, his fat hands and thick fingers popping the clutch and poor Leta screaming for him to come and save her.
âThatâs it,â he said aloud, getting to his feet and grabbing his lunch bag. Evan didnât care if he only had an hour for lunch and half of that would be wasted on the trip home and back. Leta needed him and he planned to be there.
Keys in hand, he came around his desk and was heading for the door when Leta walked into the office. A sense of relief washed over him at seeing her standing there. Most of the morning heâd wasted on people he barely spoke to on a regular basis who dropped in to wish him well. Thus far, heâd received two pies, a brisket, and a plate of singed cookies.
âHey, handsome,â Leta said, coming to the counter and setting the bag of goodies on top of the polished wood surface. âKiss me and tell me Iâm pretty.â
Evan leaned forward, puckered, and kissed her lips, saying, âIâm pretty.â
âArenât you awkwardly charming? Maybe I should let you eat that dry ass bologna sammich and those three burnt cookies and take home all this yumminess in my pack,â she said, touching his hand.
âOh, donât do that. My heart would be permanently broken at the loss of your delightful company,â he said, tapping her hand with his index finger. âHowever, in my own defense and based on what I know about marriage, when a wife shows up with lunch, sheâs either purchased a thing her husband canât afford, or sheâs here to tell him heâs going to be a Daddy.â
âListen at you all full of praise and adoration. Youâre being nice because of the possibility that Iâm incubating the next Merlin,â Leta said, causing Evan to break his normal gruff composure and laugh loudly.
The laughter brought his secretary Magda running into the main room. The Town Manager left his office along with the Judge who had performed their marriage ceremony. Each of them barreled into the office, almost skidding to a stop.
âI heard an odd noise, then I looked up and saw Evanâs face doing weird things. Oh my God, do we need to call 9-1-1?â Magda asked with genuine concern on her face. âIs he having a stroke? I know CPR. Let me at him.â
âMagda, donât you have papers to file or wings
